Bennett Eager For Return to Winning Ways in ‘El Cloughico”

Derby County Ladies Manager John Bennett is hoping for a bumper crowd to see his side returning to winning ways on Sunday against big rivals Nottingham Forest Ladies.

A 3-0 defeat to Middlesbrough last weekend was not the result that Bennett thought his side deserved after dominating for large periods of the match, but realises that without scoring, you are always open to not getting what is deserved.

Bennett said “Putting the result aside, I was delighted with the team performance and we really took it to a side that sat five points clear at the top of the table. Ultimately we know that if we don’t score, we are not going to come away with the three points and that is what happened.

“However, we got the true style of performance from our side that I knew was there and if we managed to put the ball in the net, and take one of our chances in the first-half, we would have been out of sight.

“It’s a funny old game and the previous game to that, we had managed to chalk up five goals in the cup against Bradford City Women, so we just put it down to one of those games that the luck didn’t go our way.”

The Derby County Ladies Manager, now in his second full season back at the club is keen for the fans to turn out again on Sunday against Nottingham Forest Ladies and believes it gives not only the club a huge boost but the women’s game in particular.

“We had fantastic backing last season in the Women’s FA Cup and it was a really proud moment not only for me but for the players and club to play in front of so many was brilliant for the game and whilst we know the magic of the FA Cup brought out the fans, if we can get some of those back again on Sunday, it will be great for the game in the East Midlands.

“We were disappointing last time out against Forest, we didn’t turn up and they got the decisive goal that edged it their way and we want to show what we are about, as that wasn’t a true reflection of what we can do as a side.

“We’ve had increasing support with each game that goes past and last week against Middlesbrough it was great to see the fans turn up despite a late change of venue.

“We know we are producing off the pitch and now we need to be more consistent on the pitch and getting the fans down to back us will be a huge help to us all. It’s an International week as well so both sides men’s teams won’t have played so hopefully we can get some down to attend our game”
