Derby County LFC v Huddersfield Town LFC

Ewe Rams remain unbeaten after Huddersfield win

Derby County Ladies made it 4 wins from 4 this season with a hard fought 3-1 win over an improving Huddersfield Town Ladies side, with goals from Lauren Nicholls, Nikki Ledgester and 16 year old Ellie May, who scored her first senior goal for the Ewe Rams.

A scrappy opening from both sides, showed the tense nature of the game with the teams looking to gain an early advantage. The away side were the first to settle, dominating possession without creating any clearcut chances.

That proved costly on 12 minutes as Lauren Nicholls scored an early goal of the season contender, picking up the ball inside the Derby half, to run at the Huddersfield defence before shooting from the edge of the box, with the ball looping over the goalkeeper into the back of the net.

That seemed to settle the home side, with the Ewe Rams growing into the game, edging the latter part of the half, going into the break a goal to the good.

The second half continued in the same form, with both sides having chances. Young goalkeeper Zoey Millington, proving her worth to manager John Bennett, with a string of fine saves to keep the Ewe Rams ahead.

Huddersfield Town were given a lifeline midway through the second half when the assistant linesman flagged for a dubious penalty, with Emily Jeffrey adjudged to have bundled over the Huddersfield striker, who made it 1-1 from the spot.

Both sides went in search of the crucial third goal, but it was the Ewe Rams that got the goal on 80 minutes as Nikki Ledgester fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner, the second goal of the season contender of the game, edging the home side back in front.

With Huddersfield chasing an equaliser for the second time, the game opened up allowing Leanne De Silva to punch on a mistake in the Terriers defence to poke the ball through to 16 year old May, who slotted the ball home to send the home fans into raptures, securing all three points, to take the side joint top of the FA Premier League Northern Division.

Player of the Match – Leanne De Silva

Manager John Bennett was delighted with the performance and singled out goalkeeper Zoey Millington for her performance “She was player of the match for me, her first competitive start and goalkeeper is the toughest position on the pitch. Everything that has been asked of her, distribution, handling, shot-stopping and some cracking saves and she’s a top girl too and understands the vision of the club too.”
