5 Star Ewe Rams Move Within Point of League Leaders

Derby County Ladies moved within a point of the league leaders with a 5-0 win over Loughborough Foxes WFC in the FA Women’s National League Northern Division, under the lights at Mickleover Sports FC.

A strong first-half performance and goals from Ellie Gilliatt, Hannah Ward, Sophie Domingo x2 and Hannah Keryakoplis secured the three points and set them up for Sunday’s local derby against Nottingham Forest Women at Pride Park.

1st team Coach Sarah Green told DCLFC Media “Very happy with the three points, we asked them to go out and take hold of the first-half and create chances through their quick movement and they did just that and killed the game off as a contest at half-time.

“We’d have liked a couple more goals after the break but credit to Loughborough Foxes they adjusted and kept us down to just the one second-half goal but it sets us up for a tough contest on Sunday against Nottingham Forest Women.

“Going forward we took our chances clinically in the first-half and it was very pleasing to get our first clean sheet of the season and it was a strong performance as a defensive unit, sniffing out any danger from our visitors.”

“The occasion on Sunday is always fantastic but as a squad we will treat it like any other game and we’ll be focused and read for a tough battle. Both teams have recruited a lot this summer and it will be on us now to ensure that we stick to our style of football and come away with the points.”

The Ewes went searching for an early lead and were rewarded through Gilliatt when the visitors failed to clear a corner, the ball fell to the winger to poke the Ewe Rams into a lead.

Three quick goals in as many minutes saw the home side take control, first through Hannah Ward who fired home the rebound after Keryakoplis penalty was superb saved by former Ewe Rams goalkeeper Amy Burle.

Domingo added her first of the game, rounding Burle in the Loughborough Foxes goal before firing home from an acute angle. Moments later it was 4-0 when another attack wasn’t dealt with, and Keryakoplis fired home from 12 yards.

The second-half saw more chances for the Ewes with Gilliatt, Domingo and substitute Ledgister going close with efforts, before former Leicester winger capped off her Player of the Match performance with her second of the night, firing past burle from the edge of the box to secure the victory.

Late on, the Ewes could have added a sixth but an outstanding save from Burle from debutant Izzy Ford kept the score at 5-0 and gave the Ewes their third win on the bounce, having scored 19 goals in their past three games.
