Academy Report 12/13 October

Derby County Ladies Academy Director Dave Cholerton believes the early winter months are arguably the hardest part of the season having to deal with what he would describe as close to ‘Cabin Fever’ due to weather conditions.

Last weekend saw a number of games called off due to waterlogged pitches and this week, there have already a few more called off and Cholerton believes the mental approach to not playing games is an important lesson for the development of each player.

Cholerton said “Unfortunately the weather can have an adverse affect on games and the poor conditions have started early this year and for some teams it can be weeks before games are played.

“It’s a new aspect for these players to develop the mental toughness you need to remember the work done in training as normally you would take what was learned into matches.

“It’s a bit like cabin fever when you don’t play a game and you are itching to get going. Training is played on 3G pitches thankfully and we can focus on developing but there is nothing like playing matches.

“Our teams are coping really well and its a new feature for players these days, particularly those playing a high standard. Safety still has to be the highest priority so perhaps years ago, you’d just play on pitches but that’s not the case any longer.”

Our Under 15’s continue their impressive start to the season with a 6-1 win at Warwick Juniors with goals shared between Amy, Olivia, Abbie, Ella, Hannah and Steph K.

The Under 13’s playing in the Derbyshire Under 14’s league had another solid outing with a 7-0 win with braces for Charlie and Emma the highlight of their game, as they sit third in their league with just the 1 defeat so far.

The Under 12’s White Socks were held to a 1-1 draw with Outwoods Swans, coming from a goal behind to level the match via a goal from Ellie. They sit mid-table with a couple of games in hand.

Our youngest non-competitive age groups were all in action again rounding out impressive performances with the Under 9’s in a close match with Chellaston Under 10’s. The Under 11’s also faced Chellaston with a glut of goals in the match and the Under 10’s facing Hilton Harriers under testing condition.
