Derby County Ladies Football Club

Academy Report with Dave Cholerton

Well……. What a frustrating couple of months this has been!

A couple of seasons back we had what we all thought was some of the most horrendous weather possible and we thought that it could not get worse than that but the 2019/20 season so far has somehow gone that little but further.

To say that we are frustrated as a club, as parents , as coaches but most importantly as players is an understatement and I pay tribute to the dedication of all in this testing time and the ability to knuckle down and continue to develop in training is a proud moment for the club.

Of course, we cannot do much about the weather and our teams have gone out of their way to arrange friendlies, weather that is against other teams or against our own Academy teams during weeks, showing that ‘One Club’ feel.

As we go into the Christmas break, we finally got some game time in last weekend but once again the weather has already hit this week’s games. I’m hoping the festive period will see the worst of the weather disappear and we can get some momentum back in the New Year and a consistent set of games.

Last week saw our Under 14’s side pick up a 5-2 victory over Warwick despite early struggles adapting back on the grass after a lengthy delay. However, it was a great sign to see them overcome this and get back on track in the second-half.

Our youngest age group, the Under 9’s continued their impressive development against Chellaston with a fine performance, whilst the Under 11’s produced a gritty performance against Heanor.

The Under 16’s were back in action too and produced a solid 3-0 win over Redditch and will be hoping to continue their strong season with a win at Solihull on Saturday.

The Under 15’s were in a nail-biter against East Midlands rivals Leicester City and were on the right side of a 4-3 thriller to take the points and sit just 3pts behind leaders Alvechurch.

The Under 12 White Socks were on the wrong end of a 3-0 loss to Toton and will be looking to convert their performances into victories as they move into 2020.

Hopefully some of our sides will manage to get a game or two in before the Christmas break but if not, I’d like to wish all our Players, Parents, Coaches and Fans a Very Merry Christmas and we look forward to seeing you at our annual Xmas Party at Pride Park Stadium on Sunday 22nd December at 6pm.
