Derby County Ladies Football Club

Academy Season Ready To Go

Whilst the focus of the senior set-up has been on this weekends game with Nottingham Forest Ladies at Pride Park this Sunday, it is also an exciting time as the Academy get their season underway.

Last season saw unprecedented success for the Academy and this year has seen the introduction of two new teams as we open up to a younger age group and welcome new players and coaches to all teams with over 60 new faces within the club.

This season we have also launched our Club Philosophy and the Club Handbook that will enrich both players, coaches and parents into our plans to develop women’s football in the area and ensure that we are producing players that will one day step out onto Pride Park like the current players this Sunday.

Academy Director Dave Cholerton talks through the opening fixtures and gives an insight onto the plans

“It’s the opening weekend games for our Academy teams and following 3 excellent Development Days and a good pre-season, we are set for another exciting season with eight of our eleven teams opening their season this weekend and we have a club first with our U12s Black Socks team playing in a boys league where they face Duffield at Alvaston Park on Sunday.

“The U14s Black Socks Coach, Hannah Freeman takes her team into the U14 Central Warwickshire Girls League following their U12 League Title last season where they will welcome Warwick Juniors on Saturday to Alvaston Park.

“Following winning the league last season at Under 15 level, the U16s start their defence with the same opening fixture as last season against a strong Telford side but the Ewe Rams travel away for the game this time.

“Seven of our teams are represented in the Derbyshire League, including the Foundation team who will be playing in Division One following their title winning season. The U11s Black Socks and U12s White Socks will be playing a year up to get a greater challenge.

“The Academy’s core purpose is player development and this will be the most challenging season that our players will experience with the high level opposition but in turn our players will make even more progress.

“The U11 Black Socks play Outwoods and our two new teams, the U9 and U10, will play in a non-competitive league together. The U9 are without a game this weekend but our U10, led by new coaching team, Sophie Howe, Ash Donson and Charlotte Fitch, play Shardlow United.

“Our other two Derbyshire League representatives, the U11 White Socks and U14 White Socks, play Chellaston and Outwoods respectively.”

Good luck to all of the girls this weekend and on behalf of the Academy, I would like to wish Sam and the first team the best of luck in trying to win 3 points v Forest on Sunday.
