Bennett Captures West Brom star Kate Wright

Derby County Ladies Manager John Bennett has moved to bolster his defence with the capture of Kate Wright from FA Premier League Northern Rivals West Brom WFC.

The highly-rated defender has moved across the Midlands to the Ewe Rams having played a starring role in for the Baggies last season and will be an important cog for Bennett’s side after the loss of both his central defensive pair of Emily Jeffrey and Lorna Abbey, along with stand-in defender Sam Griffiths to long-term injuries.

Bennett told DCLFC Media “To capture the signature of a talent like Kate, will give us a boost going into the new season. She is someone that we watched last season and she’ll fit in perfectly with the squad.

“We’ve had terrible luck with injuries to our defenders last season, it seemed like it was never ending. Towards the end of the season we were relying on our midfielders to fill in all areas across the back but now we can move forward.’

Wright started 25 games for the Baggies and said it was a tough decision to leave for Derby County Ladies after 9 years at the club but feels read for a new challenge, Wright said “It was a hard decision to leave West Brom but feel the move will be beneficial and will bring lots of new opportunities.

“I’m really excited to have joined Derby County Ladies and I am looking forward to what the future holds.”

Bennett continued “Kate is our third signing of the season so far and there are more to come. We are building a decent squad packed with youth and experience and these are exciting times both on the pitch and off the pitch.”
