Emily Owen “We are Showing our Character after Blip in Form”

Article by Derby University Football Journalism Student Greg Ahrens

Last week saw the Ewe Rams dig deep to show their character as they battled from two goals down to take a point against West Brom Women, to stop a two game losing streak in the FAWNL last week.

For Derby County Ladies Centre-Back Emily Owen, it was pleasing to see the determination and character after successive defeats and believes the squad are close to getting back on track.

Owen said “We did really well to keep up the high intensity. I feel we dominated the game throughout and did really well to come back from two down to get it back to two all.

“To be fair to West Brom the goals were very good strikes, but they had two shots on goal and scored two. However we showed our character and spirit and always felt in the game.

Owen felt her side should have put away more of the chances they created: “At the end of the day we peppered their goal, and some more should have gone in that we missed. But we worked so hard to get those two goals in and we did really well”

“People keep forgetting that we are near enough a brand new team. We are still gelling; we’re working hard in training, obviously listening to what the coaches want us to do. We are still learning how each other play as well. So, to dominate as we are, unfortunately not winning games, but it is coming.

“You could see against West Beom we all wanted it. Unfortunately, we didn’t win but to pull it back to 2-2, if we can finally get that win on Sunday it might set us off on a streak.”

Owen believes they can finally get the win they’ve been chasing against TNS this weekend: “I feel like every game is an important game. Whether its league or cup, we still need to put that pressure on. We still need to fight, and we still need to get the goals in.

“They might be a league below us, but they’ll still come at us fighting so we need to stay switched on and hopefully put things right that we got wrong. Hopefully we can get that win on Sunday”
