Match Report

Derby County Ladies lost their unbeaten four match streak after a clinical display from Leicester City Women in a 4-0 win for the Foxes in the FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division.

The Ewe Rams welcomed back Shannon Weston to the side after work commitments, as Manager John Bennett made three enforced changes with Weston, Sophia Bonser and Nikki Ledgister returning to the line-up.

The Foxes started brightly creating some decent half-chances as they looked to press the Derby County backline early. Their perseverance paid off on 17 minutes when Sophie Domingo was on hand to prod home after the Ewe Rams failed to clear the ball.

More chances came for the home side as they pressed for a second and on the stroke of half-time, Ewe Rams goalkeeper Sarah Morgan was lucky to still be on the pitch with, Domingo through on goal, only to be brought down, with arguably Molly Johnson being in the vicinity, being the only saving grace for the Derby shot-stopper.

The second-half continued in the same fashion with the Foxes extending their lead on 57 minutes as the pace of Domingo again caused problems, with her battling ability winning the ball back, before a lovely swivel shot saw the ball in the back of the net.

On 63 minutes it was game over for the Foxes, with the goal of the game, as chief destroyer, Domingo’s pin-point cross found the head of Leigh Dugmore, who made no mistake inside the 6-yard box for a 3-0 lead.

With the game now out of sight, Derby Manager John Bennett brought on Development team players Dani Oxley and Kira Rai, with the two attack-minded players making a difference for the Ewe Rams in the final period of the game.

However, it was Leicester that had the final say as Kim Farrow added a fourth on 82 minutes to wrap up proceedings with Ewe Rams boss Bennett having no qualms with the result.

Bennett said “We have no complaints with the result, Leicester were the better side and save for a couple of brief patches of play, we were outplayed and punished by a very good and clinical side.

“The one positive we can take is the performance of both Dani (Oxley) and Kira (Rai) when they came on and they made a difference and that is what we will take from the game.

“We have highlighted the areas that we need to address and now it is my job to look at that in the break we have before our next league match. We have Bradford City again, a week on Sunday in the WPL Cup and we will go out there and try to restore some confidence and then we need to start making plans for how we recover in the league.”
