Out-Of-Character Performance See’s Ewe Rams Fall To Defeat

Derby County Ladies crashed to a 1-0 defeat to local rivals Nottingham Forest Ladies in a FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division clash at Basford United.

A goal midway through the second-half from Nottingham Forest Ladies’ Hazzana Parnell gave the home side all three points in a scrappy affair and left the Ewe Rams searching for answers after an out-of character display.

Caretaker Managers Sam Griffiths and Jenny Simpson made two changes to the line-up from last week’s FAWPL Cup win over Rotherham United Ladies with Molly Johnson and Amy Sims taking the place of Kate Wright and Karagh Tait.

In blustery conditions, both teams struggled to create chances and it took until the 40th minute for a clear cut chance from either side with Forest striker Amy Dicken forcing goalkeeper Sarah Morgan into a smart save.

Derby’s best chance fell to former Nottingham Forest Ladies star Andi Bell but she was adjudged offside after a through ball looked to have released her and the half ended 0-0 with both sides hoping the break would ignite their performance.

The Ewe Rams started brightest in the second-half with Bell’s shot on 46 minutes narrowly going the wrong side of the post.

The visitors continued to struggle however as the home side began to assert pressure with Dicken again forcing Morgan into a fine save after robbing the ball in the Derby midfield.

The only goal of the game, came on the hour when a high ball bounced nicely for Parnell to nick in front of the on-rushing Morgan to chip the ball into the net and give the home side the lead.

Further chances came for both sides with Derby looking threatening down the left with Amy Sims working well with Lisa Giampalma, whilst Hannah Ward’s 30-yard free-kick was well held by the Forest goalkeeper.

However, it was the home side that earned bragging rights and all three points in a disappointing defeat that left Griffiths puzzled by the performance.

“We just didn’t seem to be at the races today and couldn’t get going. We didn’t seem to have any time on the ball so all credit to Forest, they pressed us well and we weren’t able to adapt and come up with a counter.

“I think both teams struggled in tough conditions but they seemed to handle it better than us and we paid the price for not adapting quick enough. Our passing was wayward and we put ourselves into trouble at times.

“However, we will get back on the training field this week, evaluate and go again next week. We can quickly put that performance behind us and move onto Huddersfield next week. The games will come thick and fast now which means we can’t dwell too much.”
