Derby County Ladies Football Club

Ewe Rams Academy Set For New Season

Derby County Ladies Academy Director Dave Cholerton believes the upcoming 2018/19 season has the potential to be the best yet after he hailed the quality at the club’s Development Day Trials that saw nearly 150 youngsters earn places for next season.

The Academy has seen two new teams added to the mix as an Under 9’s team has been created to extend the age-range, as well as the Foundation Team moving under the Academy’s control, giving more players coming through the system a place to enter into senior women’s football.

Cholerton said “We had another amazing response to our Academy Development Days that saw nearly 230 youngsters attend and naturally we have had to make some tough decisions as the standard goes up year on year.

“I’m excited for next season, we have added another age group to the mix and there are kids still younger that want to get involved with the Ewe Rams. The growth in grassroots level football continues to rise and with more opportunities, there is more to work with in producing players that can go on and represent the club at senior level.

“This is why we brought the Foundation team into the Academy fold in that we want players that are on the cusp of adult football to know that they have a place to continue to improve and somewhere they can aspire to be if they want to reach the best level.

“We’ve always been very good at producing players to go through to adult football and if we can get more and more talented players to come through the system, we are going to have a very good team at the top end of the women’s game very shortly.”

This season will also see the launch of the club’s playing philosophy and handbook at Academy level and Cholerton believes that if everyone knows the direction that the club are working towards, the results could come quicker.

“We’ve worked hard as a club over the past year to shape the direction of what type of club we want to be both on and off the pitch and these philosophies will be a key indicator in how to get there and what each of our Academy teams and coaches will be aspiring too.

“We’ve been delighted with the response to getting new coaches on board and I think that those coaches that have come into the club this season have been impressed with the direction the club is looking to go.

“We have always said we want to do it the ‘Derby Way’ and we truly believe we can now all work together in one direction right through the club from the youngest group, through to the senior teams. It is important that we as a club have a direction to enable us to go that little extra as we look to become a premier team in the women’s game.
