Derby County Ladies Football Club

Ewes Unbeaten Run ended by Fylde LFC

Match Report by Derby University Football Journalism Student Dominic Scott-Bone

Derby County Ladies were unable to continue their unbeaten run as they fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Fylde Ladies in the FA National League – Northern Premier Division.

Georgia Stevens’ fifth minute strike proved to be the difference between the two sides in well fought encounter at Mickleover Sports.

On her 10th appearance for the Ewe Rams, Leah Kellogg was called into action within three minutes and saved well to her right-hand side to stop Fylde’s Emily Hollinshead.

However, just minutes later the Coasters took the lead through Stevens who tapped home into an empty net after a lofted through ball evaded Kellogg’s grasp.

Rachel Ball was forced off with a knock after ten minutes of play, so it was an earlier introduction than expected for club captain Hannah Ward who had missed the Stoke fixture due to injury, her presence brought a much-needed calmness to a frantic start.

As the half went on Derby managed to establish a foothold in the game and after a well-worked corner and a goalmouth scramble, the ball fell to Stephanie Smith who struck the ball cleanly but was unable to beat Fylde’s goalkeeper Brittany Jackson.H

The Coasters started strongly in the second-half and Stevens met a looping cross, but luckily for the Ewe Rams the post came to their rescue.

As Derby continued their search for a goal, Cara Newton’s half-time substitution was reaping the rewards. All in attendance were ready to celebrate an equaliser, but for the left palm of Jackson which clawed the ball off target after the Ewe Rams’ top goal-scorer struck towards the top corner.

Cara Newton and Jodie Redgrave continued to link-up well and with just ten minutes to go another of these combinations paved the way for Andi Bell to strike from close range, however she was unable to guide the ball goal-bound.

It wasn’t to be for Sam Griffiths’ side as Redgrave had an effort of her own in the final few seconds of play, but it was stopped on the line by a swarm of black and yellow shirts.

In the end, Derby were well off their best. They failed to build on their previous impressive results that ultimately left manager Sam Griffiths confused.

She said: “I’ve just spoken to the girls and I can’t believe the difference from Thursday night to today. It was the exact same start 11 who started the game against Stoke and there wasn’t anything to suggest that it was.”

Griffiths’ frustration was clear to see. She claimed that her teams’ character wasn’t what she was expecting and has been seeing in recent weeks.

“The team didn’t show anywhere near the hear, passion and desire that they normally bring on the pitch. I think we got what we deserved today.”
