Derby County Ladies Football Club

Excited Gibb Pays Tribute to Bennett

Club CEO, Duncan Gibb has declared himself excited at the prospect of  Director of Football, Sam Griffiths taking on her first senior management role within football, when she migrates from the role to that of Head Coach at the end of the current season. At the same time he also paid a glowing tribute to outgoing Head Coach, John Bennett.
“It’s hard to put into words the respect that I hold for JB, as both a coach and as a man. During my tenure at the club he has had two spells at the helm and delivered excellent outcomes on both occasions, most recently leading the club to a highest ever 5th place finish in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) last season.
“He’s delivered those outcomes despite having a significant and unforeseen health scare back in 2016, as well as having limited resources to work with compared to a number of clubs operating at our level. I’m more than happy to place on record that whilst I’m at the club, there will always be a role or a door open for JB.”
Looking forwards, Gibb is excited at the prospect of Griffiths role change, on the back of the parent clubs recently announced significantly increased support to its female arm. “Sam is a hugely respected coach, who has worked incredibly hard to be become one of a limited number of UEFA A Licence female coaches in the UK.
She has a number of well-considered ideas that she’ll be looking to introduce for next season and the increased support from the main club will certainly help her in bringing those to fruition.
“A number of clubs that have applied for Tier 2 licences seem to be recruiting for positions right across the spectrum of the club, despite the application process already having closed. I’m not overly sure how that actually works, given that clubs were obliged to name these staff and present their qualifications to prove due diligence; however we’ve been quite blessed in that regard with the team that we either have at the club already, or have access to. As such, once John had made his decision to stand down at the end of the season, we were able to seamlessly fit Sam into the role.”
