Griffiths Adds Five to Round Out Ewe Rams Squad

Derby County Ladies Boss Sam Griffiths has added five new names to her squad for the 2018/19 FA Women’s National League Northern Division campaign and believes her new look side can move forward to the new season with an added sense of belief.

The Ewe Rams Manager has moved to add duo Steph Smith and Callan Barber from Coventry United Ladies, Emily Joyce from Birmingham City Women, Rachel Ball from Stoke City Ladies and Monique Watson from Doncaster Rovers Belles.

These five new players make the total number of summer signings to eight and the former Derby midfielder, now in her first season at the helm of the Ewes, thinks the fresh look of the squad can have them looking to strive forwards.

Griffiths said “It’s been a really exciting off-season and I’m happy that we can now look forward to the Middlesbrough game and get down to business on the pitch. I believe we’ve got a squad that can move us in the right direction and have us challenging in what is likely to be an exceptionally tough division.

“We’re into our pre-season now and we are looking strong at training and working out plans for the new season and we have had an excellent response from the girls and I’m delighted to see how well we’ve integrated the new players and how quickly they have settled”

Manager Sam Griffiths gives us the low-down on our five latest signings

Emily Joyce – “Im absolutely delighted to have secured the signing of Emily. I had her as part of my Under 17s Centre of Excellence squad a few years ago. She’s every coaches dream to work with. Her energy and passion she brings to the pitch will be a huge bonus for us next season and she can also play a number of positions which is something that’s attracted us to her.”

Monique Watson – “Monique has joined us from Doncaster Belles and  she’s a tenacious attacking midfielder who is every players worst nightmare to play against. As well as her ability to win the ball back, she’s also technically very gifted, has great feet and can shoot for fun. Although she is still young and learning she has all the attributes to have a very bright future in the game and we are looking forward to her playing for Derby”

Steph Smith – “Steph has to be one of the key signings for us, we’ve lacked a certain type of player at Derby for a few seasons now and when Steph first trained with us I said to the rest of the staff this is the player we have been missing. She has settled in really well and is already a key part of the team. The experience she brings from playing at Coventry in the Southern Division will be essential for the team. I know a few teams had been after her this season which shows how highly rated she is, so when she committed to us I was delighted and can’t wait to see her in a Rams shirt”

Rachel Ball – “I didn’t know much about Rach until she asked if she could come for a trial and out of all the players she’s the one that has surprised me the most. She brings such energy and positivity into the team and I’m really looking forward to working with her. Having been with us for a short period of time she doesn’t know the meaning of losing, she leads by absolute example and another one I can’t wait to see in a Rams shirt”

Callan Barber – “Callan is another player joining us from Coventry, again a player with a huge amount of potential to have a real impact in the team. Technically a very good player which gives us very strong options for our midfield unit. She reads the game really well and having played in a strong Coventry team competing in a tough league she knows what it takes to grind out results”
