Griffiths Backs New Player Pathway for Academy

Derby County Ladies Academy player pathway has been announced for the 2019/20 season, on the back of the club recently publishing it’s 5 year plan, a key part of the plan is for the club to produce it’s own talent that could one day represent the first team.

The Academy will have an u18 team and a senior team that has been re-named the Community Team, that will play in the Regional League following their promotion.

The teams will be coached by UEFA B coaches Chris Sanders and Dan Dobrzycki with Academy Director Dave Cholerton keen to see the Academy continue to bring it’s own talent through the ranks.

Cholerton said “The U18 team has been introduced to present the Academy players with a pathway to senior football with the Ewe Rams. The team will consist of u17 players, playing in the Warwickshire League with Coach Dobrzycki seeing this development as a ‘2 year plan’ for players who are aiming to play for the Development side by the age of 18.

“The U18, Community and Development teams will work closely to ensure our players are challenged at the right level and are supported to achieving their potential.

“The Academy is continually growing and we hope to attract the very best players from the region who have the ambition to play at the highest level for Derby County Ladies.

“Players who are selected for the u18 and Foundation teams will receive top class coaching from our UEFA B coaches, strength and conditioning and dietary advice, access to excellent match day and training facilities.

These will include access to gym and fitness facilities, play competitive opposition to bring the best out of players and will be a part of our #OneClub supportive network from the Academy and DCFC.”

The developments of these two teams will also have the backing of First Team Manager, Sam Griffiths and she said “The player pathway now has real direction and can only be a positive step towards the goal of developing our own players.

“The Academy has shown it can develop quality players in Amy (Sims), Kira (Rai) and Hannah (Ward) and our current crop of players should be inspired by their achievements.

“I have mentored Chris and Dan through their UEFA B courses and I am confident that their players are in good hands in terms of achieving their potential and I look forward to seeing what they can produce.

“The Academy is in the strongest position position it’s ever been for developing players since I’ve been here and it’s am integral part of the club.

“The Foundation team has only been together two years and following back to back promotions, they will now represent the Club at Regional level and bring more of a challenge to our players.

“The ultimate goal for this team is to play at the highest level and with what they’ve achieved in the last two seasons is a great start for them and they are in excellent hands and I’m looking forward to more regular players coming through the system to make us self-sufficient.”

The trial dates for players wanting to play for the U18 and Foundation teams are Saturday 29th June and Saturday 3rd July and will be held at Broomfield College.

The Academy junior team structure has also been announced. We will be introducing an U8 team from next season and we plan to have one team at every age group from U8 up to U16.

We will have two teams at U12 where we will continue to enter a team in the Derby Junior Boys League, therefore giving our players the option of playing against boys or girls. This will take the number of Academy teams to 12.
