Griffiths Excited for Season after Fixtures Released

Derby County Ladies boss Sam Griffiths expressed her excitement for the new season after the 2018/19 FA National League Northern Division Fixtures were released, that see’s the Ewe Rams start with a tricky away fixture at Middlesbrough Women.

The season will get underway on the 19th August and will culminate in May when they will finish with an away fixture at Doncaster Belles on the 5th and Griffiths believes that with teams such as the Belles, Sheffield FC and Sunderland all joining the league, it will be incredibly tough and no easy game on paper.

Griffiths said “We are in doubt whatsoever that we have an incredibly competitive league once again this season and its hard to predict any team staking an early claim as favourites and each side will feel if they work hard they can be at the business end.

“Of course last season’s Champions Blackburn Rovers will be strong but we also have the four newcomers to the league, with three from the old WSL who will be unknown quantities after the restructure of the leagues.

“Throw into the mix the local rivals in Stoke City and Nottingham Forest and organised teams such as Huddersfield, Bradford, Guiseley and Fylde, you can see the quality that will be on show this year and it’s about us making sure that we are ready to go on that first day.”

Griffiths however is only focused on a game at a time and believes you can’t look past the next game and will be hoping that the Ewe Rams can kick off the season positively against what is likely to be an organised and attacking side in Middlesbrough.

“We have to worry about what we do first and foremost, we have had a really good pre-season so far and results are irrelevant at this time. We are trying to install our ideas into the team as quickly as possible and its been brilliant to see how we have reacted.

“We have brought a few new faces in and seen a few depart and I feel we are coming along nicely at this stage of the preparations. We are still looking to see what we can bring in if their is sufficient quality available but i’m really pleased with where the squad is heading.

“We know what Middlesbrough do well, they have arguably the best attack in the league and the pace they play at is frightening and can catch teams cold before they have even got going. We will have to be switched on from the start if we want to start well.

“We are taking one game at a time, we cannot look further ahead, there are too many teams and so are focus will be on Middlesbrough and countering what they have to offer and then once through that, we can look to the next game but that old cliche of one game at a time is true and we look forward to the new season with great excitement and anticipation.”
