Griffiths Ready for Curtain Raiser

Derby County Ladies begin their season this weekend with a trip to newly promoted Burnley WFC and Manager Sam Griffiths believes her squad are equipped to put in a promotion challenge after a summer recruitment drive.

The Ewe Rams have brought in 7 players this summer with Sherry McCue, Sarah Jackson and Sophie Domingo joining from East Midlands rivals Leicester City WFC, Stoke City WFC duo Hannah Keryakoplis and Emily Owen as well as Kelly Darby from Nottingham Forest WFC and marquee signing Ellie Gilliatt from Sheffield United WFC.

Griffiths said “We’re really pleased with our recruitment this off-season and we did our business early to enable us to get on the training ground and work hard in the build-up to the season. The new girls that have come in have given the squad a boost and we’re ready for Sunday.

“We’ve bought in a good mix of characters and experience and we’ve strengthened in the areas that we felt we needed too and now its about putting it all together from what we’ve learned on the training field. If we can do that, we’ll have as good a chance as any other team this season.

“There are no easy games, everyone of those teams will have the same aspirations that we do and they’ll have their strengths and weaknesses but the harder we work as a team and for each other, the more confident we are that we can be in the mix at the end of the season.”

Sunday’s trip to Burnley WFC will see the Ewes face a side that have momentum after their promotion last season and Griffiths says it offers her side a fresh test against a side they are not familiar with and that it will see them have to adapt quickly once the game is underway.

Griffiths said “It’s an interesting match up on Sunday with two confident teams that have had their best ever seasons last year. We don’t know as much as we would against a side that we have played for a number of years and so that will give us fresh problems.

“They only conceded 14 all season and so we will need to break them down if we are to come away with the three points. Taking our chances will also be key and so our all round game will be important and pre-season has set us up nicely.

“We’ve got a lot to look forward to this season and it’s a fun time to be a Ewe Rams fan. We’ll hopefully give our all to the cause and we can’t wait to see our fans support us again this coming season. The buzz is back and we’re ready to go.

“We’ve got another match at Pride Park where we will take on Nottingham Forest WFC again and that was an amazing moment last year and we want to get even more down to that match on the 8th September. We’ve got an important run of games first however so focus is on our early season form.”
