Derby County Ladies Football Club

Match Preview – Huddersfield Town Ladies (Home)

Derby County Ladies will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss last weekend, when they take on Huddersfield Town Ladies at the Don Amott Arena on Sunday. (2pm Kick-Off)

After a bright start to the season with two confident wins, last week’s 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest Ladies was a setback for the club and caretaker Manager Sam Griffiths is hoping that the loss can be a stepping stone for greater things.

Griffiths said “We all came away last weekend deflated not only with the loss but with the manner of the performance but fair play to the squad, they held their hands up and realised it wasn’t good enough and sometimes you have to go one step back to go two steps forward.

“We’ve had a big week in training and it has been fantastic to see and I really think they will want to gain back their pride on Sunday. I think it hurt the players and they want to put it right.

“We’ve been boosted by the news of a partnership with In-play Sports this week too which will see our home games filmed for analysis and the players are keen to see us take that next step and they know that every effort is being made off the field for their success and now we need to replicate it on the field.

“Huddersfield Town Ladies have had a similar start to the season to us and there are no easy games in this league, so we will have to work hard and do what we do best. They work hard off the ball and we need to match that and get back to what we did so well against Rotherham United and Stoke City. If we do that then I am confident we will get the result.”

Derby County Ladies Squad (From)

Sarah Morgan, Zoe Millington, Hannah Ward(c), Kelly Kennaugh, Kate Wright, Emily Jeffrey, Megan Clarkson, Chloe Hutsby, Amy Sims, Molly Johnson, Shannon Weston, Camilla Newton, Lisa Giampalma, Sam Griffiths, Lauren Cresswell, Leanne De Silva, Georgia Hewitt, Nikki Ledgister, Karagh Tait, Sophia Bonser, Andi Bell, Hannah Jones, Kirsty Allen

Key Player

Lisa Giampalma – Having signed on for another season at the Ewe Rams, Lisa’s influence on the squad continues to flourish with her never say die attitude that see’s her all over the pitch, fighting for every scrap of the ball. An experienced campaigner, Lisa is one of the first names on the team sheet and pops up with crucial goals and works hard for the team when on the ball and off the ball. The midfield star will play an important role for the club on Sunday as they look to get back to winning ways.

Huddersfield Town Ladies – A View on the Opposition

After finishing 9th in the FA Women’s Premier Northern Division last season, Ashley Vickers side will be looking to improve and have started the season with two excellent victories over Guiseley Vixens and West Brom, before Sunday’s loss to reigning champions Blackburn Rovers.

A hard working side that like to play to their strengths up front in particular, the Terriers work hard off the ball and are quick to close the opposition down. In Emily Heckler, they have one of the top strikers in the league and if she fires for the visitors, they will be a tough team to beat and keeping her quiet will be a focal point for a lot of sides this season.

Manager – Ashley Vickers

Key PlayerEmily Heckler – With an eye-catching 93 goals for Huddersfield Town Ladies across the last three season’s and with three more to her name already this season, Heckler is one of the best strikers in the league and her deadly accuracy and power are a particular force in her game and many teams have struggled to handle her. She will be one to keep an eye on this Sunday when she faces the Ewe Rams.
