McCue Makes EweRams Move in Fourth Summer Signing

Derby County Ladies have added their fourth signing of the summer with the capture of Leicester City Women’s Midfielder Sherry McCue ahead of the 2019/20 FA National League Northern Division Season.

The former England Under 20’s star captained her country at the Under 20 World Cup in 2014 and last season made 14 appearances for the Foxes after joining from fellow FA Northern Division side Sheffield FC at the start of the 2018/19 campaign.

Speaking to DCLFC Media, McCue believes she is coming into a side that is eyeing a Championship place in the near future and said “I’m really pleased to join Derby County Ladies ahead of the upcoming season and I’m itching to get back to pre-season training and join up with the squad.

“It was great to play in the FA Women’s Championship last season and I’m excited to get there again and that’s why I joined the club as I believe they have the potential to get there this season and I’m confident I can help to play my part.

“The squad is shaping up really nicely and the club have momentum after last season and we need to hit the ground running so I’m looking forward to working with the coaching staff and getting our game in gear, ready for the 1st game of the season.”

The midfielder starter her career with Stoke City Girls Centre of excellence before moving to FA Women’s Championship side Aston Villa Ladies for four seasons. A two-year spell at Sheffield FC Ladies followed, which saw her named Players Player of the Season in 2016.

This experience was a key cog for Ewe Rams boss Sam Griffiths when she was looking to add to her squad ahead of the upcoming pre-season and said “We’ve been looking for that holding midfielder role ever since Emily Joyce went down with an ACL injury in our final game of the season.

“To get Sherry in with her experience of playing in the Championship and her experience at the England age groups is a big coup for us and I’m excited to see her in a Derby County Ladies shirt. I like her style, her calmness on the ball and the ability to dictate play.

“We’ve added four very good, experienced players to the squad for the season so far and I’m liking how we are shaping up. We’ve got a lot of hard work to do in pre-season to get us ready and having Sherry in will help us drive standards with her workmate and will to win.”
