Pre-Match Pack: Bradford City Women

Match Preview written by Derby University Football Journalism Student Luke Thrower

Derby County Ladies boss, Sam Griffiths, believes Sunday’s fixture against Bradford City Women is an important fixture ahead of a packed week for the Ewe Rams.

On the back of a disappointing 1-0 loss to Fylde Ladies, before a few weeks without fixtures, the Ewe Rams are back in action at home to Bradford City Women. Griffiths believes the game is an important fixture, ahead of the three game week.

In reflection of the previous loss to Fylde, Griffiths said: “We’ve picked ourselves up after our lack-lustre defeat last time out against Fylde Ladies and we knew that we didn’t do what we had planned and that it was arguably the most disappointing defeat of the season knowing that had we performed to anything like what we can, we’d maybe have picked up a point, if not all three.

“Thankfully, last week’s set of results whilst we had a week off, couldn’t have gone on any better and it has given us a huge boost to know that we could be on the verge of achieving our goals of a top 4 place and maybe even improve more than that.

“We are building the foundations for next season already and these last 8 games will go a long way to starting the season off the right way next year and momentum is a huge positive so Sunday is an important day with three tough games over the next week.”

The Ewe Rams also face a packed fixture list, facing Sheffield LFC and Guiseley Vixens, all within a week of facing Bradford City Women. Griffiths said: “We have Sheffield FC Ladies under the lights on Thursday Night and they are battling to avoid relegation, so [Sheffield FC Ladies] will see us as a game that they can pick up points if we don’t perform as we can. I think all teams are improving as the season draws on, whereas in the past some have dropped off as the season draws to a close.

“With 3 games in seven days, it’s important that we keep injury free and fresh because next weekend we face Guiseley Vixens who are flying at the moment and we want to be able to go there and look to stop their momentum and set us up for the remaining games.”
