Derby County Ladies Football Club

Pre-Match Pack: Doncaster Rovers Belles

Preview written by Derby University Football Journalism Student Luke Thrower

Derby Ladies travel to Doncaster Belles in the final game of a historic season for the Ewe Rams.

With a top four place confirmed, Sam Griffith’s side can go one better in their final game of the season. A victory would confirm at least third place for Derby, whilst only bettering Sunderland’s result on Sunday would confirm a second-place finish due to goal difference.

The previous meeting between the two sides ended in a 4-2 victory for Derby, despite key players missing as well as going a goal down within the first ten minutes.

Despite Doncaster’s league position, the Yorkshire side have only lost once in their last five and only narrowly lost 3-2 in their previous game to Fylde. The Belles’ change of form and fortune hasn’t gone unnoticed either.

Head coach Zoey Shaw won manager of the month for the Women’s National League North/South in the month of February. Doncaster earned three well fought draws against some well established sides in the league, possibly most impressive being the 2-2 draw with Huddersfield.

With Derby making a real effort of fighting for second and Doncaster looking to end the season on a high, going into the next, it is set up to be an entertaining final league tie.

One to watch: Andi Bell

Grabbing herself an assist last game and working hard down the flanks against Sheffield, Bell has summed up the squad in her all-round play. Her effort and marauding runs can cause problems for the opposition whether that’s grabbing a goal or playing that final cutting pass to her teammates.
