Derby County Ladies Football Club

Pre-Match Pack: Fylde WFC

Derby County Ladies go into Sunday’s game with Fylde WFC on the back of a morale boosting 3-1 win at Middlesbrough WFC last weekend and with Boss Sam Griffiths urging her side to be more clinical as they face an important two weeks of football.

Goals from Sophie Domingo, Hannah Keryakoplis and an own goal secured the three points against a promotion rival and with Fylde at home this weekend and a visit to Huddersfield Town WFC next weekend, the onus is on the players to take points off their promotion rivals says the Ewe Rams Boss.

Griffiths says “It was another pleasing performance and we got what we deserved as we dominated for large spells of the match. The first-half we had nine chances with six on target so to only go into the break level was probably our only disappointment in the final third.

“We are creating lots of chances and we need to be taking these and being more clinical to ensure that we don’t get punished. We’re all working hard in training on this and so I know its only going to get better as we move further into the season.

“Again we had a sloppy error at the back to allow them a goal and that has been the majority of our goals conceded, rather than anyone breaking us down. If we can clean this up as well and again the work in training has been really good, as well as the collective thought process as a team to combat this.”

The weekends visit of Fylde WFC will see the return of the popular former Ewe Rams star Jodie Redgrave after her summer move to the Coasters. A popular figure in her one season spell at the club, the talent of both Redgrave and the Fylde side will be a tough one to crack says Griffiths.

“It was great to have Jodie with us last season but she felt she wanted to move closer to her Northern roots and so she departed us in the summer. She had a big impact in her season both on and off the pitch and she was a popular member of the squad that achieved their highest ever position last season.

“We know how good she can be and so we will need to be at the top of our game to combat her threat but there is talent all over that squad as we found out last season when they did the double over us. We didn’t play to our ability in either game last year so hoping that we see a difference, starting on Sunday.

“They will have high hopes of a promotion challenge as well and as we keep saying their are probably 6 teams all looking for that spot and so taking points of a challenger is what we need to do and hopefully we can get the win and move the momentum to Huddersfield the following week.”

Sunday’s game against Fylde WFC is a 2pm Kick-Off at Mickleover Sports FC with Derby County Season Ticket Holders free on production of their ticket and just £3 Adults and free for Under 18s which includes a Junior Season Ticket. Dual sports star Leah Kellogg joined the Ewe Rams at the start of the 2018/19 season from local rivals Long Eaton United Ladies and this season has been entrusted with the gloves for the majority of the campaign and has helped to form a formidable last line of defence. A talented shotstopper who is improving all the time, Leah is one of the hardest workers in training and is always looking to develop her game. A talented sportswomen, she is also the captain of Derbyshire Women’s Cricket Club.

The Coasters have been a consistent Top 6 side over the past few seasons in the FA National League Northern Division and is one of a number of teams with one eye on a promotion challenge. Last season they did the double against an underperforming Ewe Rams side and they will be looking to repeat that success again tomorrow. The thorn in the Ewes side over the past few season has been Emily Hollinshead and this year she has been joined by former Derby County Ladies star Jodie Redgrave, who fans will know can have a big impact on any game.
