Pre-Match Pack: Guiseley Vixens

Derby County Ladies face Guiseley Vixens in the FA Women’s National League – Northern Premier Division this Sunday. The Ewe Rams boss, Sam Griffiths, believes the fixture is an opportunity to show “consistency” and achieve the team aims for the season.

Derby head into the game on the back of a 2-1 victory over Bradford City Women, thanks to a last gasp winner from Grace Harrison. Griffiths believes the late drama was something of a “wake up call” for the players, stating: “We’ve had a bit of a wakeup call last week but it wasn’t for want of trying or complacency, it was our quality that wasn’t quite there for us and a resolute performance from Bradford.

In reflection, Griffiths added: “We need to be better in the final third and take our chances. Up until Bradford we had been more clinical since the new year, it was a struggle last week, but we didn’t stop until the last second and [we] were rewarded with the late goal.

We also need to keep our focus and patience across the pitch. Games like last week can test the resolve and we allowed them a goal that was avoidable and teams like Guiseley will take advantage if your focus is slightly off.”

The Ewes edged the previous two encounters with Guiseley, claiming a 2-1 victory at home in October as well as a 2-0 victory away in December. Guiseley head into the game in eighth, winning three of their last five fixtures, and currently have the third best defensive record only behind that of leaders Blackburn Ladies and Fylde Ladies.

Griffiths believes the game is a big opportunity for the Ewes, saying: “We’ve got a real opportunity to achieve our goals this season and finish in the top 4 but we have to come to places like this and put a performance in and show the consistency needed in this league.

Looking at the opponents, Griffiths said: “Guiseley are the in- form team at the moment and are going about their business with confidence and we have to stop their game plan if we are going to pick up the points needed. We’ve had two tough games against these already this season and thankfully they’ve gone our way by the odd goal and that shows you how tough it will be to get the three points.”

Key Player: Monique Watson

Since moving from Doncaster Belles in the summer of 2018, Monique Watson has been ever-present in the Derby squad. The tricky attacker draws in defenders and turns them with her brilliant ball control and low centre of gravity. Coming up against a team with a defensive record as good as Guiseley’s, Watson could be an integral figure in the Ewe Rams line-up to ensure victory.
