Derby County Ladies Football Club

Pre-Match Pack: Guiseley Vixens

Derby County Ladies Boss Sam Griffiths is hoping for a response from her squad after they were knocked out of the FA WNL Cup last weekend to lower league Bolton Wanderers Ladies with the Ewe Rams back to league action against Guiseley Vixens.

Having took all three points in a tense affair with Sheffield LFC on the Thursday evening under the lights, Griffiths had hoped to build on that win and push for silverware but the performance by the squad was what the Ewe Rams boss called lacklustre.

Griffiths said “It was a tough loss on Sunday and we just weren’t at the races and Bolton fully deserved the win. We couldn’t get going and like the previous Sunday at Fylde, we gave ourselves too much to do in the second-half and that is something we need to overcome.

“I always like to reflect after games, whether we have won or lost and I made some mistakes in that game but that’s what this process is about, reflecting and learning from them and though we don’t ever like to lose and it would have been nice to push for some silverware, I’d rather it came in the Cup than lose ground in the league.”

“We’ve got a good chance to bounce straight back on Sunday and if we can look busy from the start, it will show that we have looked at our game, particularly how we start them and we will have learned from the mistakes. That’s what I love about this game, being able to get back in the training ground and working on them.”

Key Player – Karagh Tait

The Ewe Rams youngster is into her second season with the club and has made the seamless move to centre-half alongside skipper Hannah Ward in a new look partnership at the back. With the Ewe Rams going unbeaten for the first 8 games of the season, the partnership has clearly been one of the successes of Sam Griffiths early rein and Tait continues to flourish in her new role with the collective defensive group conceding just 11 goals in 10 league and cup matches so far this season. Another performance like that from Karagh this weekend could see the Ewe Rams go top of the table.

A Focus on Guiseley Vixens

Last season the Vixens stayed in the FA Women’s National League Northern Division on goal difference but have significantly strengthened in the off season and will be looking to keep themselves clear of any danger and work their way up the league table. So far the season has been a mixed bag with strong performances against Nottingham Forest and Bradford City, whilst a narrow loss to league leaders Blackburn Rovers was also a positive performance. However, a disappointing loss last time out against Doncaster Rovers Belles leave the Vixens looking to make amends this weekend when they make the trip to the Don Amott Arena to face the Ewe Rams.

Guiseley Vixens Key Player – Sophie Walton

Guiseley pulled off a coup in the summer with the signing of the experienced former Notts County Ladies midfielder Sophie Walton. Her spell with the Ladypies saw her regularly start in WSL1 and if the Ewe Rams want to control today’s game, they will need to keep on top of the talented star. She has already popped up with two goals this season against Bradford City Women and in the Cup against Chester-Le-Street Town Ladies and she will be looking to add to her tally and shoot the Vixens up the table and put a dent in Derby County Ladies promotion hopes.
