Pre-Match Pack: Huddersfield Town LFC

Pre-Match Pack Written by Derby University Football Journalism Student Luke Thrower

Derby County Ladies take on Huddersfield Town Ladies in what can only be described as a season definer at the Don Amott arena this Sunday.

The Ewe Rams come into the game in fourth after beating third place Middlesbrough 2-0 last weekend thanks to Monique Watson and Jodie Redgrave goals.

Similarly, Huddersfield come into the game in high spirits themselves. Winning their last two on the bounce, beating second place Sunderland 2-1 last week, bringing them within a point of Derby with two games in hand over the hosts.

Derby manager Sam Griffiths seemed to relish the challenge stating, “Every game we seem to play at the minute seems to be the most crucial one, all we can do is keep turning up, keep putting the work in on and off the pitch and hopefully take three points.”

The sides last faced each other in November, where Huddersfield just edged out the Ewe Rams in a 5-goal thriller that ended 3-2 to the hosts at the Stafflax Arena. Derby will be looking for to create a slight point gap, with Town breathing down their neck with the threat of games in hand at play too.

Goal scorer from the weekend, Jodie Redgrave, believes a win is what the team should be aiming for. “I’ve kept my eye on Huddersfield because I know they’re a really strong team and I think they have a couple of games in hand on us as well, so we have to go for the win if we do want to compete for second or third and finish as high as possible.”

With the season coming to the tail end and the race for second heating up, Redgrave was asked if 12 points for the Ewe Rams was enough for that second spot, “I’m unsure, if you asked last week I would’ve said that I think Sunderland are going to run away with it [second place] if I’m being honest but we just have to keep trying to get three points on the board and just hope that they muck up.”

One to watch – Emily Joyce

The central midfielder has been an ever-present staple in the Derby Ladies team this season. Her ability to control the tempo of a game, play intelligent passes as well as the defending side of the game has made her a top-class performer for Derby week in week out. In a game that could get physical and could hinge on the midfield battle being lost or won, Joyce is the key figure to look out for in the clash.
