Pre-Match Pack: Nottingham Forest WFC (FA Cup)

Derby County Ladies go into Sunday’s match with local rivals Nottingham Forest Women in the 2nd Round of the Women’s FA Cup at Mickleover Sports FC with the opportunity to progress in two cup competitions in successive weeks.

The Ewe Rams were cruelly beaten at Pride Park back in September as a late goal gave Forest all three points in a game dominated by the hosts and Boss Sam Griffiths is hoping that the memory of that day can help inspire the club on Sunday.

Griffiths said “We were really disappointed back in September and it was a tough loss to take having dominated for the best part of the match but we were made to pay for not putting the game to bed and thats what good teams do and they did that on the day.

“That win has given them a springboard this season and they are going really well and so we probably go into the game as slight underdogs which has not been the case in recent seasons so this will be a different kind of pressure for both teams to deal with.

“It’s a home match and we are back at Mickleover Sports for the first time in what feels like ages and so hopefully that will give us a boost and we hope that a nice vocal crowd will be down to support us too. It’s usually a cagey affair between us and I expect this to go that way too and hopefully we can come out on top.”

The Ewe Rams go into the game with a Cup victory behind them as they overcame a plucky Brighouse Town WFC last Sunday on penalties and Griffiths believes that the win will catapult them to a hopeful FA Cup run, starting with Sunday’s derby.

“We weren’t at our best last Sunday but we did enough and probably it shouldn’t have gone to penalties but we showed character and calmness to secure the win through to the next round and we can build on that on Sunday and look to progress there.

“Having a month without a competitive fixture was tough but we had to deal with it and whilst we did look rusty at times, we were the team that were on the front foot and if the decision to give Brighouse a penalty, which in our mind was outrageous, we’d have probably not gone the distance.

“We dealt with that though and the aftermath, where we could have lost our heads, we managed to re-group and make sure that we went back on the front foot and then secured the passage through on penalties.

“That will give us the confidence that we can go and get the win on Sunday but we will need to be at our best to take on a Forest side that have momentum behind them but we have again got our own plans and we will look to play our game and progress through to the 3rd round of the FA Cup.”

Sunday’s Women’s FA Cup match is the slightly earlier kick-off time of 1pm at Mickleover Sports FC.

Nikki is one of the longest serving players with the Ewe Rams and is now into her 11th season with the club where she has been a consistent performer either in the heart of midfield or in a more advance role. Her tenacity and ball winning skills make her a natural born winner in the midfield of the park with over 200 appearances in the white and black. Nikki has more than earned the title of a Ewe Rams Legend and has become part of the fabric at the club both on and off the field.
