Derby County Ladies Football Club

Pre-Match Pack: Sheffield FC Ladies

Preview by Derby University Football Journalism Student Luke Thrower

Derby Ladies take on Sheffield Ladies in the Ewe Rams’ final home game of the season this Sunday at Mickleover Sports FC in the FA Women’s National League Northern Division.

A victory for Sam Griffith’s side will confirm a top four spot, with Middlesbrough having already concluded their season. Derby come into the game in good form, losing just one of their last five.

Sheffield also come into the game in great form, despite sitting in eleventh in the league. The visitors have won three of their last five, drawing the other two.

The previous meeting between the two sides was back in October, where Derby narrowly won 1-0 against their Yorkshire opponents.

The visitors change in form and fortune has come along with new manager Calum Oakenfold, most recently off the back of a draw against Yorkshire rivals Doncaster Belles who the Ewe Rams face in their final game next week. It was Millee Clarke who scored an edge of the box strike to make sure Sheffield left with at least a point from their rivals.

With Derby aiming to push for second place, with a game in hand over Sunderland but falling just short due to goal difference, and Sheffield looking to prop themselves up to the higher reaches of the league, it is set up to be a competitive and entertaining game of football.

One to watch: Kira Rai

Rai has impressed since becoming part of the squad, creating dangerous runs and becoming a handful for opposition defenders. Coming off the back of scoring a goal against Huddersfield, Rai is sure to want add to her tally for the season and help the Ewe Rams push for second.
