Cruel Late Goal See's Ewe Rams Under 16's Denied Win

This was Derby’s first match of the season, played at our new home ground at Broomfield College. The conditions were wet and rainy in first half which stopped in time for the second half. Derby had played and beaten Burton last season, but it soon became clear that they were a much improved opponent.

Burton kicked off the match at 10-30, and were asking questions of our defence from the off. Derby were slow to press which allowed Burton space and time on the ball. Early signs provided some good defending from, Kiran, Katelyn, Charlotte and playing out form the back from Olivia linking up with Elysha creating our best early attacking moves.

On 7 minutes - Burton won a corner which unfortunately wasn’t cleared, played back and ended up being an own goal in the back of Derby net.

(1-0 Burton).

Burton continued to press and pressure, being awarded 5 corners in the first 15 minutes of play, which lead to some tense defending period of play for Derby. Burton had clearly being working on their set pieces and were putting their corners into good effect.

On 16 minutes – Derby had some good build up play from midfield passing the ball to Phoebe who from around the half way line turned her player and made a great ball through to Sophie who was in a forward position. She managed to get the ball under control from inside the box and stuck a great shot into the bottom left hand corner, giving the Burton goal keeper no chance.

(1 -1 each)

Eve and Shannon were working hard in Midfield, but all round Derby were still not pressing as well as they can, allowing Burton to attack and shoot. Millie was called on to make numerous excellent saves to keep an eager Burton on level pegging.

After about 25 minutes into the game Derby were starting to settle and close Burton down. On 28 minutes Derby won a corner, which Shannon crossed and Sophie headed and was unlucky not to score, Burton managing to clear off the line.

On 34 minutes - Phoebe off for Jemma

Kiran off for Amelia

During the first half Derby took longer than Burton to settle, were giving the ball away cheaply, not pressing and pressuring Burton quickly enough. Our defence was having to work hard and take on board considerable pressure, and did well to be going into half time on an equal footing.

On Half time -     Derby County 1 Burton Albion 1

Eve off for Anna

Following the team talk at half time Derby came out playing much better with some good passing moves involving Amelia, Sophie and Jemma. In the first 10 minutes of second half Derby were pressuring and won a number of corners. Anna and Shannon were working hard and winning the ball for Derby Midfield. Amelia made good use of her pace down the right wing and was unlucky on a number of occasions.

On 55 minutes - Alysha off for Lauren

Lauren sporting her new Grecian sun tan showed off her foot work to start off a number of moves.

Whilst Derby were more dominant in the second half, with some good link up play with Sophie and Jemma up front, Burton were still a constant threat and could have scored again in the 65th minute

On 67 minutes - Shannon off for Katy

Katy was immediately in the action involved in a number of attacks. Hannah had an excellent run and shot, which the Burton Keeper was unable to keep hold of. Derby were applying pressure and sensed a goal coming.

On 76 minutes - Sophie off for Phoebe

On the 79th minute – Derby were attacking and passed the ball to Katy who ran in space with the ball down the left hand side of the pitch, got herself into a shooting position. Her shot was well placed and fumbled into the back of the Burton net (2-1 Derby)

On 80 minutes - Katy off for Alysha

Burton were determined and with a bit of luck in the Derby goal mouth managed to score in what was the final kick of the game. (2-2 Draw)

Final score: Derby County 2, Burton Albion 2.

Conceding an equalising goal in the last minute was disappointing but on balance this was probably a fair result with Burton dominating much of the first half and Derby dominating in the second half. It is clear that this season is going to be much tougher challenge than last season requiring 100% concentration and effort, which I am sure the Derby girls will rise to.

Man of the Match:

Man of the match today was Millie. She made some excellent one handed saves especially in the first half that kept Derby in the game. Well done Millie!

Thanks to parents for organising coffee, tea and cakes and to Simon and Steve for running the line.

Thanks for your support!
