Derby County LFC U16   3

AFC Telford United U16   2

On a blustery Saturday morning in Alvaston the Premier Leagues top two teams locked horns in the match of the day as Derby County LFC U16 played host to AFC Telford United LFC U16. Both teams share a common passion to get the ball down and play football the correct way, pass and move the ball with high intensity. If previous encounters are anything to go by then we were in for a treat.

During the opening 15 mins Telford were the better team and although they were enjoying some good patterns of play they were unable to carve out any real goal scoring opportunities to trouble Ewes keeper Naeve. Derby gradually started to stamp their authority on the game and then during a whirlwind 2 minute spell Derby succeeded where Telford failed, which was to score goals during periods of the game when you have the opposition on the back foot. With 18 mins on the clock Derby broke the deadlock with a classic poaches goal from Ewes striker Eden who is now playing some of her best football since joining the club. Then a minute later Derby made it 2-0 with not only the goal of the game but probably the goal of the season. Straight from the restart having just gone a goal down Telford’s attempt to force an immediate response broke down on the edge of Derby’s 18 yard box and in a wonderful incisive counter attacking move involving 3 passes Jessica made it 2-0 to the Ewes. Derby were now in complete control of the game playing some wonderful football and Telford were having to work extremely hard just to stay in the game. They were having to defend wave after wave of attacks as Derby went in search of that all important third goal to put this game to bed before the half time interval. Credit to Telford though they somehow managed to weather the storm and on 32 mins following a rare forage into Derby’s 18 yard box Telford managed to claw themselves back into the game scoring with an unstoppable shot from 18 yards to reduce the deficit.

Half time Score 2-1

The Ewes started the 2nd half in much better fettle and were immediately on the front foot asking all the questions as they went in search of a 3rd goal that would effectively end this match as a contest. Enjoying their best period of the game Derby’s dominance was finally rewarded with just 14 mins remaining on the clock. The Ewes top scorer the pacy Juliet (Jet) set off on one of her Usain Bolt type sprints with the ball at her feet leaving the Telford defenders behind in her wake to score Derby’s third and her 10th goal of the season. Not surprisingly Telford’s character shone through again with their never say die attitude they refused to rollover and with just 5 mins remaining they were handed a life line when they were awarded a penalty which they converted to make it 3-2. The last few minutes must have felt like a lifetime for the Derby coaches, players and their supporters. Derby did hold on to maintain their 100% unbeaten start to the season played 6 won 6.
