This was Derby’s second Cup match against Castle Donnington. Today the weather was near perfect for football, bright, cool, damp and no breeze.

There is a saying you should never count your chickens before they hatch. Last time these two teams met Derby won 12-1. Derby kicked off and with the first attacking move, Purdy passed to Pickering who crossed to Fitch whose shot was saved into the path of Howe and within the first 20 seconds Howe blasted the ball into the back of the net from close range.

1 – 0 Derby

To Castle Donnington’s credit they didn’t crumble and maintained a high back line to defend a wide range of Derby attacking moves that followed. Derby worked the ball from defence with Wade, Allen and Purdy playing numerous long balls up to Hajra, Pickering, Howe & Fitch.

On 9 minutes Castle Donnington had a glimpse of a chance on the break requiring a good save from Jodie. Moments later at the other end Haslam made a good shot that dipped just over the Castle Donnington goal. This was followed by a Pickering cross headed over the bar by Hajra.

On 30 Minutes – Haslam, Howe and Purdy off, Gourlay, Shelton & Roe on

Straight in on the action Gourlay passed to Roe who played a good switch to Fitch, defended by Castle Donnington.

Derby had most of the ball in the first half, playing searching runs, making shots on goal, and dominating play. However, today Derby were unable to capitalise their possession with the opposition breaking down play.

2 – 0 Derby

Derby now stepping up the tempo and the attacks winning numerous corners, with Purdy going short to Freeman crossing to Roe who headed wide.

Moments later, on 73 minutes – Haslam showed good determination to win the ball, cut the ball back across to Roe who was waiting in the box and then able to place the ball into the back of the net.

3 – 0 Derby

This was followed by a good move involving Wade, Purdy, Pallet, Howe, Freeman, Shelton down right crossing the ball going just over the bar. Immediately followed by a pass from Howe to Roe, who was in on goal but unable to keep her feet.

On 82minutes – Purdy found Howe in the box who made a good shot which was well saved by the keeper. This was followed by a Derby Free kick which Shannon took quickly from long range, striking a well hit ball which looped over the Castle Donnington’s keeper – great goal.

The last ten minutes played out with Derby attacking and Castle Donnington attempting to counter, not giving up to the end, requiring some good defending from Pallet, Allen, Freeman & Wade
