Derby Ladies Football League 18-19

Starting Line up

This was Derby Ladies Foundation team’s second league match against Wirksworth, having beaten them 5-1 a few weeks earlier. Today the conditions were very cold and ground was heavy and slippery under foot.

In the first 10 minutes Derby soaked up some early pressure and were lucky to keep a clean sheet following several attacking moves and corners from Wirksworth, requiring Jodie and Derby defence to be on the toes. At the other end Purdy played a good long ball for Fitch to run onto who showed good effort shooting wide. This was followed with Pickering and Haslam playing through to Roe but was caught off side.

On 16 Minutes – Derby put their best passing move together which was neatly played from Pickering, Haslam, Purdy, Gourlay, back to Haslam, Pickering finding Roe who was eventually out muscled by Wirksworth’s defence.

On 21 minutes – Farthing off, Storrar on.

Moments later Freeman played to Fitch who headed on to Gourlay, taking on the defence and in the box got her shot away which was saved by the keeper.

On 30 minutes – Roe & Fitch off, Howe and Barker on.

Moments later Freeman was unlucky, taking a long shot, from the edge of the box which went just wide of the post. This was followed by Gourlay playing the ball to Howe who took a first time shot, which she hit with pace but went wide dipping over the bar.

The first half played out positively with Derby dominating with Storrar making a positive impact on the game, in defence on the attack and making good use of her long throw in’s. There were numerous attacking moves and shots away from Purdy, deflected for Gourlay to shoot over the bar. Followed by a Freeman corner Haslam had a good effort shooting wide.

On Half time - Derby County 0, Wirksworth 0

Substitutes – Shelton off, and Farthing back on

Following the re-start Derby continued to build on their first half dominance, setting off numerous attacking moves with Howe picking the ball up from the edge of the box making a positive shot with her left foot which was saved by the Wirksworth keeper.

On 56 Minutes – Derby broke the deadlock with an excellent corner delivery from Freeman, allowing Gourlay to get her head on the ball at the near post sending the ball into the back of the net.

1 – 0 Derby

This was followed again by Gourlay passing to Pickering, then Purdy onto Haslam who shot wide.

On 59 Minutes – Farthing Off, Shelton on.

Barker was unlucky in a 50:50 challenge with the keeper, with the ball falling to Purdy who was quickly closed down by the defence. At the other end Wirksworth provided a “wake up call” with a 1 v 1 needing Jodie to make an excellent save to deny the Wirksworth striker.

On 67 Minutes – Barker & Howe off, Roe & Fitch back on.

Straight into action Haslam played in Gourlay whose shot was saved falling to Fitch who, on 69 minutes, shot from close range sending the ball into the back of net in off the bar.

2 – 0 Derby

Halsam, playing some good link up and through balls today, played Roe through but was called off side and later had another shot on goal saved by the keeper.

On 81 Minutes – Following some determined work in the box Fitch won a Derby corner. Freeman delivered another well weighted corner into the box where Roe was waiting to head the ball home to finish off any hopes of a Wirksworth come back.

3 - 0 Derby

On 82 Minutes – Roe & Fitch off, Howe and Barker back on.

The game played out with Howe sending the ball wide to Purdy who had taken up a good position on the edge of the box blasted the ball goal bound but was denied by the bar. This was followed by a Pickering effort going wide too, which was the last move of the game.

Final Score - 3 – 0 Derby
